From now on “Basketballnews.lt” presents new rubric – “Lithuanian basketball curiosities”. This time, let us present one basketball product from different angle – The Other Dream Team movie. The story covers not only Lithuanian basketball but also broader historical events.
The incredible story tells about four starter players from Lithuania who played in Soviet team in Seoul Olympics in 1988. The thing is that two key players – Arvydas Sabonis and Sarunas Marciulionis were prohibited to play in NBA, the only chance to reach this goal is only by winning Olympic games. Soviet team won the gold and Marciulionis was the first player to join NBA team. Later it is about the fall of the Soviet Union which allowed Lithuania to reestablish its independence and enter the Olympics as an independent country. After 50 years of Soviet oppression, the Lithuanian basketball team was a symbol of hope and liberation.
The movie is also entertaining because of snappy things. The director presents funny details of Soviet everyday life: e.g. how professional basketball players were wondered about bananas and oranges, which they saw in United States, or how they bought plenty of jeans for selling it in Lithuania in order to make extra money.
Movie viewers will see not only Sabonis and other stars from 90’s, but also the current basketball star Jonas Valanciunas, Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus, David Stern, famous NBA players and Grateful Dead member Mickey Hart.
